Roles of order_tags of an order

Order tags play a wide variety of roles when it comes to an how ads that may have driven the order are attributed. Order tags are used in determining

  • Subscriptions: if the order is part of a subscription, and if it is a first-time or a recurring order
  • Customer Stage: if the order is from a first time or returning customer
  • Order Exclusions: whether the order is to be excluded from attribution altogether

An Order Tag is a way of tagging an Order with Customer Specified attributes.

  • You can have as many Order Tags as you would like.

Common order tag types include:

  • Orders from a native shopping experience (e.g. TikTok Shops)
  • Manually created orders (draft orders, wholesale, orders by a sales rep)
  • Marketplace or app orders (e.g. Tapcart, Shop App)
  • Returns (used to exclude from Attribution)
  • Cancelled orders (used to exclude from Attribution)
  • Third party checkout orders (e.g. ClickFunnels, Walmart, etc.)

Subscriptions

Many Northbeam customers want to track ad attribution or revenue based on whether an order kicks off a new subscription or is part of a recurring one. Order tags make it easy to spot first-time subscriptions versus recurring orders, so you can see both types of attribution in your dashboard. Order tags are required to categorize subscription order types in your dashboard data.

Using the Subscription Order Tags page in the Settings Section of your Northbeam Dashboard, a customer can choose which order tags are associated with which stage of a subscription - thus enabling them to delineate between first time or recurring subscription order and revenue. A category Other is also included to capture orders that could be either.

Customer Stage

Order tags can also play a role in determining if the order is from a first time or returning customer. By default, the logic we apply to determine if an order is form a first-time or returning customer is by taking all orders from a particular customer_id and looking at the orders as a function of time. The first order in the sequence is a first-time customer, and all subsequent orders are labeled returning customer.

If this logic is insufficient for your use case, please submit a support ticket with our Customer Success team to consult on how we can leverage your order tags to capture the logic you seek to leverage!

This delineation can be used to analyze orders (and revenue) as a function of both of these customer stages.
