# Limits

> This Page describes the limitations of the Orders API and suggested uses

The Orders API upsert function allows for uploads of order batches. While the API has a hard limit of 1000 orders per call, we recommend using the order size per call that best suits your needs.

## Rate limits

Order upload requests are rate-limited per API key by the total request-body size sent over a sliding time window.

| Endpoint | Limit per API key |
| - | - |
| `POST /v1/orders` | 30 MB per 60 seconds |
| `POST /v2/orders` | 30 MB per 60 seconds |
| `PATCH /v2/orders` | 30 MB per 60 seconds |

The budget is shared across all three endpoints — bytes sent to any of them count toward the same 30 MB / 60 s window per API key.

## Response when rate-limited

When the limit is exceeded, the API responds with:

* HTTP status `429 Too Many Requests`
* `Retry-After` header with the number of seconds until you can retry
* JSON body:

  ```json theme={null}
  {
    "error": "rate_limit_error",
    "retry_after_seconds": 37
  }
  ```
